Data check
Check marine dataset files and their metadata before you publish them. Add your files or a link to a public Zenodo or GeoNetwork record or a DOI; the tool proposes a column mapping, you confirm it, and it reports each problem it finds in plain words, with the rule and its source.
What it checks
- Licence: is it stated, machine-readable (name, version and link), and the same in every record (ISO 19139, DataCite, Zenodo)?
- Metadata against the data: dates outside the stated time span, points outside the bounding box, variables named in the abstract but missing from the file.
- Rows: impossible coordinates, latitude written into the longitude column, ragged rows, text in numeric columns, unreadable or ambiguous dates, missing units.
- Across several files: the same samples under different dates or unit labels, swapped or differing station positions.
- Chemistry: unit pairs that disagree (e.g. mg/L against µmol/L), DIC above alkalinity, values outside published QC ranges (Argo, GTSPP).
What this tool does not check
- Whether the measurements are scientifically valid.
- Instrument calibration and measurement accuracy.
- Species names and taxonomy.
- The contents of PDF files (tables are not extracted from PDFs).
- Variables for which this tool has no cited range or unit rule.
Files you drop here are read and checked by your own browser and never leave your computer. See the privacy page.
